Palmistry readings for celebrities are hard to come by, since world famous palm reading experts take their client confidentiality agreements very seriously. However, there have been many famous people who were so touched by their readings that they actually wrote about them or spoke publicly on the matter, such as Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde, to name but two. Leaders like Julius Caesar gazed upon palms to judge whether or not a man was worthy of serving on his guard. Brilliant minds like Aristotle, Thomas Edison and Alexander the Great were all intrigued by what the art of hand reading had to say about them.

Bob Marley was not always the talented singer we know today. In his earlier days, he was giving palmistry readings to the villagers of Nine Miles in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica. Palmistry is certainly not common practice in North American culture, yet it continues to be broadly practiced across the globe for amusement. In the past, though, Napoleon Bonaparte's wife, Josephine, was very heavily motivated by her psychic, Madame Marie Anne Lenormand.

Mark Twain was one of the most prominent individuals to see hand expert Cheiro for palmistry readings. Admittedly, Twain was a disbeliever, who said, "The past may leave its mark, I admit, and character may be told down to its finest shades of expression; all that I might believe -- but how the future may even be foreshadowed is what I cannot understand." Later, in Cheiro's guest book, Twain wrote, "Cheiro has exposed my character to me with humiliating accuracy." The very first thing the palm reader observed was that Twain's head line was entirely horizontal, which is often found on people who are adept at "seeing both sides of anything that interests them."

Michael Jackson had another one of the more famous palmistry readings to look at. The most remarkable feature was the very rare double head-line. Famous palmist Cheiro said that, "A double head line is very rarely found, but when found it is a sure sign of brain power and mentality. Such people have a perfectly double nature -- one side sensitive and gentle, the other confident, cold and cruel. They have enormous versatility, great command of language, a peculiar power of playing and toying with human nature, and generally great will and determination." It seems his predictions accurately spoke of Jackson's eccentricities. Palmistry experts suggested that his heart attack and early demise is evidenced by the enormous island below the heart line near his left pinky finger, combined with the unusual formations near the head-line and the horrible condition of his finger nails.

For more on the history of famous palmistry readings, one can look up some of the greats, such as Captain Casimir Stanislas D'Arpentigny (published La Chirognomie in 1839), Adrien Adolphe Desbarolles (published Les Mysteres de la Main in 1859), Katherine Saint-Hill (founded the Chirological Society of Great Britain in 1889), Edgar de Valcourt-Vermont (founded the American Chirological Society in 1897), Count Louis Hamon /Cheiro (published Cheiro's Language of the Hand in 1894), William Benham (published The Laws of Scientific Hand Reading in 1900), Charlotte Wolff (published works from 1936-1969), Noel Jaquin (published works from 1925-1958) and Arnold Holtzman (Psychodiagnostic Chirology).

Palm readings are a mixture of science and, as most would say, guessing. Most people take them at sheer entertainment value and little more. But there are some individuals who swear by their readings and claim that they are incredibly accurate. Drop by Palmistry Basics and make up your own mind.

In the northern Arabian Peninsula during the second half of the 7th century, Qays, later known as Majnun, is in love with his cousin Leyla and decides to praise her in his love poems. Annoyed by all the noise around her, Leyla's parents consider that he has compromised her honor and force her to marry another man. Qays becomes desperate and wanders alone in the desert. His father takes him to Mecca and begs him to seek God's help to free him from his passion, but in vain.
The story of Majnun and Leyla has been told in legends, songs, poems, plays and epics from the Caucasus to Africa and from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. It is a story of tragic and endless love, much like the later story of "Tristan and Isolde" and "Romeo and Julia" in Europe.
This volume consists of a translation into English of several of Majnün's poems to Leyla together with comments and an introduction. An incurable romanticism, the deepest longing of the heart to its beloved, nostalgia, memories of a lost paradise, idealism, anticipation, joy after a reunion, bitterness after a separation, lovesickness and a consuming passion emerge from the versions that have inspired countless of people more that 1200 years ago and throughout the centuries.

Joyce Akesson: My book is about relations, more particularly about love relations, but not only about that. I believe that in whatever relation one is having, the past plays an important role. A person is programmed genetically and through his/her up-bringing to experience certain patterns. So the past is connected with the present.
Furthermore, in many of my poems I like to move from an inner reality, which can be a place that does not exist or suddenly exists in my mind, the past, the future, a sublimated reality, another dimension, a labyrinth, a parallel world, a meditative or dreamy state, or from an outer reality, which is a real setting that makes me ponder over the state of the world or over my own situation, to other zones, then off to a connection, whether emotional or physical or both, with a loved one.
Not in this particular order, but I have tried to connect all these different dimensions or worlds together in my poems.

PageOneLit.com: What is it about poetry you enjoy? Do you feel poems offer more freedom of expression than lets say a fictional novel? Explain.

Joyce Akesson: Poetry captures an emotional experience in a special language. I enjoy it when it is a spiritual adventure and a mystical experience. I see it as a window opening on a specific time and place or as a mirror reflecting one's face or many faces or both. I like it too when it can be a provocation.
Whether reading or writing poems, I like the kind of poems that makes me think and associate continuously by offering open worlds, images, metaphors and thoughts. In this manner, they initiate a communication, a sort of inner dialogue, and also an inner process that makes me develop my own thoughts.
A fictional novel usually follows the conventions of plot and character.
Poetry is known to cross boundaries and is therefore unconventional and free.
It can present a fresh perspective and a new way of looking at an issue. It can also offer different interpretations to a matter through its abstract images.
I see it as an invitation to go inside and outside and to reconstruct oneself and one's reality.

Joyce Akesson: I do not have one favorite poet. I like many poets very much like Billy Collins, Kenneth Koch, Louise Gluck, Octavio Paz, Pablo Neruda, David Wevill, Ted Hughes, Auden and the French surrealists like Paul Eluard and Henry Michaux.

PageOneLit.com: In Love's Thrilling Dimensions your subject matter is very universal, thoughts, feelings, sensory experience and reality - Did I leave anything out?

Joyce Akesson: You got it somehow covered. I wanted to base my poems on universal themes that are particular to love in all its different dimensions.

Every person's experiences in a particular relationship are subjective and unique, and it is this uniqueness that can be recognized by others as being universal. The more authentic a writer's thoughts are and the more universal they become for others to understand and to identify with.

I have also taken up themes relating to metaphysics, existentialism, reincarnation, the birth and expansion of the universe, planets ruling our lives, the four elements, the concept of parallel words, the interconnection between events, the principle of causes and effects and the struggle with opposing forces, such as war and other calamities, just to name a few. I like to believe in auspicious signs, in a meaning with our lives, and in love in all its forms as being a driving and healing force in this journey.

What a wonderful book of poetry to touch the heart, deepen the spirit, and stir up the emotions! Joyce
Akesson, gifted poet and extraordinaire, puts into words not many have the talent to achieve. Her writing is
clear, profound, and creative, while at the same time poignant.
Out of the many pieces Akesson portrays in her book, it’s hard to find a favorite because I could say many are
my favorite. However, there is one that stands out in my mind, and I’ve re-read it several times; each time
getting a deeper meaning. It is:

Perhaps poetry is the highest written form of love. In Love's Thrilling Dimensions, Joyce Akesson proves this point. With care and tenderness, this Swedish writer doles out a collection of poetry that is thoughtful and thought provoking, with a voice that is full of spirit and pleasant rhythm.

At a fundamental level, the collection explores the many dimensions of love and what it is to be human. Akesson travels through hopes and fears in the face of love, yet she also delves into existential questions that many readers will appreciate. She easily flows between asking, "Are we playing at something/or are we doing it for real?" and more figurative concepts like that of Chaos who "sometimes glares at the world/while smoking his cigar." There are many moments like these that grant depth to her work beyond the surface features of love.

Speaking from personal experience, although I imagine many will agree, poetry about love definitely has its ideal moments to be consumed. After a break up I will probably reach for a dose of Rumi, or during a loving relationship I will feel motivated to pen a love poem for a partner. In the meantime, even though I am not one to necessarily gravitate to a collection about love, this book still has a relevant place on my current shelf. Despite being in a life phase in search of love, my romantic and tormented soul still appreciates stanzas like "Who would have known/that a kiss could quench my thirst/like this?" or

You are at the mercy of this consuming love,
this heartless thief named passion,
who with a joyless eye,
unlocks your heart,
penetrates your mind
and devours your soul
from the inside out.
Ultimately Love's Thrilling Dimensions is an enjoyable float through well-crafted phrases, appealing cadence, and expressive emotion. Akesson shares truths about life and love in a way that reflects modern life and is embraceable by modern audiences.
